Crews made significant progress yesterday and secured the containment line at the western flank of the Rey Fire and Horse Canyon, giving firefighters a secure anchor point to work from.
The Drought And Tree Mortality In Montecito
The Montecito Fire Protection District is aware that more and more trees are showing signs of severe stress due to the continuing drought. Most alarming is the number of dead trees showing up throughout the District. The diminishing ground moisture, and in some cases completely dried soil conditions, have weakened the defense systems of our native oaks and ornamental pines. Even the hardiest of the tree specimens, eucalyptus trees, are starting to die.
Notice of Vacancy Montecito Fire Protection District Board
he Montecito Fire Protection District has a vacancy on its Board of Directors. Pursuant to Government Code section 1780, the Board intends to fill this vacancy by appointment of a qualified applicant to serve as a Director until the next general District election in November 2016. The appointed Director then may seek election to the Board for a regular term of office. Persons interested in applying to fill the vacancy should know the following:
Grilling Safety
June and July are peak months for summer grilling fires. The official start of summer is June 20th, and backyard chefs everywhere are dusting off their grills, eager to spring into the long-awaited barbeque season. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that grillers pay particular attention to safety, especially in June and July, when home fires involving grilling incidents occur most often.
“Hands Only” CPR Training
As a part of the world wide “CPR Day” event, local Emergency Medical Service agencies will offer free “hands only” CPR training for members of our community on Wednesday, May 18 at multiple locations throughout the County. Emergency response agencies throughout the world will be participating. Join us here in Santa Barbara County as we attempt to train as many members of our community in “Hands Only” CPR as possible!

Trail Rescue, McMenemy Trail
At approximately 11:05 a.m., The Montecito Fire Protection District and American Medical Response responded to the report of an injured person in the vicinity of La Casa de Maria. On further investigation it was determined that the injured person was located on a nearby trail, therefore Santa Barbara Sheriff Search and Rescue were requested to assist.
