Can I apply if I haven’t completed my CA Firefighter I Academy?

You must have completed your CA State Firefighter I Academy, or already have your CA State Firefighter 1 Certification by application close date in order to apply. You must upload one of those certificates with your application.

Can I apply for both Firefighter EMT and Firefighter Paramedic?

Yes. Submit a separate application for each posting. You must meet the minimum qualifications for each position.

Can I apply if I live out of state?

Yes. You must have the required CA certifications or provide proof of eligibility for reciprocity. Must obtain CA Paramedic Licensure prior to appointment. Candidate must be able to attend testing in person.

Can I re-apply if I made a mistake on my application, or forgot to attach a file?

Yes, GovernmentJobs allows you to reapply but you must wait one day for the new submission.

The posting says the application period closes at 5:00 p.m. Is that Pacific time?

Yes. Late applications are not accepted. Incomplete applications (missing required attachments) will not be considered.

Do I need to bring anything to the oral interview or paramedic skills assessment?

No. There is no need to bring anything to either the paramedic skills assessment or the oral interview. You will be provided any necessary tools or equipment for the paramedic skills assessment, and the oral panel has a copy of your application and resume/cover letter.

Can I use my own agency’s protocols during the paramedic assessment?

Yes. You may use your home department’s protocols.

Can I reschedule?

No. Missing your assigned slot or arriving late is a withdrawal.

When will I hear something?

Candidates will receive an email receipt after application submission. Additional emails will be sent updating candidates after each section of the recruitment. Please check your spam. Successful completion of each section in the recruitment does not guarantee continuation into the next section.

Is the list ranked?

Yes. The list can be used to fill current and later vacancies during its life. Placement on the list is not a job offer.

How long is probation, and what schedule will I work?

Probation is 12 months including an approximate 10-week department recruit academy. Firefighters work a 48/96 schedule.
