At approximately 11:05 a.m., The Montecito Fire Protection District and American Medical Response responded to the report of an injured person in the vicinity of La Casa de Maria. On further investigation it was determined that the injured person was located on a nearby trail, therefore Santa Barbara Sheriff Search and Rescue were requested to assist.

The units responding were able to make contact with the reporting party and collaboratively were able to determine the location to be on the McMenemy trail just west of the San Ysidro Ranch property. The reporting party relayed that a hiker had fallen and likely had a broken ankle.

Responding units reached the individual who contacted 9-1-1 and determined the best access to the patient. All emergency personnel continued westward on the trail, reaching the patient within 10 minutes. The patient was immediately assessed and treated by Montecito Fire Paramedics, and subsequently packaged into the “stokes” basket in order to be extricated down the trail.

Santa Barbara Sheriff Search and Rescue personnel were on scene shortly after Montecito Fire personnel and assisted with patient packaging and the arduous process of moving an injured person down the trail to the waiting ambulance for transport to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
